April 4th, 2018

International and study abroad students were recognized during International Education Day for their winning photo contest entries.

Grand prize

Karley Smith, Southeast Missouri State University

“This photo was taken on Cotopaxi Volcano in Ecuador at an elevation of over 15,000 feet!  I took this picture of my friend Madison, right before the cloud in front of her engulfed us.  This photo is significant to me because it makes me think of soaring to new heights to accomplish my goals. After all, we walked in the clouds, and if we can do that, we can do anything!”

Study Abroad

1st place

Zach Buchheit, Southeast Missouri State University

“This photo was taken at Kinkakuji in Kyoto, Japan. This photo was taken on a weekend trip I left Taiwan and went to Japan. This photo means so much to me because it was one of the first times in my life I refused to let there be a boundary to my experience and spontaneously bought a flight to Japan to explore the country while I had the opportunity. I cannot wait to go back again and see more that Japan has to offer.”

Sunset at the local fish market

“After flying into Santa Cruz island in the Galapagos, we had a chance to explore the local scenery.  As the sun sets, local fishing boats line the docks of the fish market.  You could feel the excitement in the air as the fishermen brought in high quality fish such as, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi and wahoo.  The birds fly close by to see if they can scavenge any unsold scraps.  This was just one of the many beautiful views on our trip to the Galapagos Islands.”

3rd place

Allison Toth, Southeast Missouri State University

“After my initial culture shock wore off from living in Spain for five months, I came to the realization that while people may be different all over the world, we still have core similarities that remain consistent across oceans and through language barriers. Every person I met in this wonderful country had a dream and a passion just like everyone I love back home. We aren’t as different as we think. We all just want to find whatever it is we are looking for while simultaneously living and loving with the people we value most.”

International Students

1st place

Mannat Varshney, Southeast Missouri State University

“This photo was taken in Barcelona, Spain on February 23rd 2018. You can see the La Sagrada Familia in this photo, beyond that is the sea. Not a lot of people know about this route from Bunkers del Carmel to Park Güell. The weather was pleasant that day and the lighting was just perfect. The city of Barcelona, like never before.”

2nd place

Alessandra Maya Thompson, Southeast Missouri State University

“I am in the Tennis Team at SEMO and on the 21st of November 2017, my team and I travelled to St. Louis Zoo. When we went to the butterfly building I managed to take a picture of a butterfly flying and I really liked it. I actually have this picture as my phone wallpaper because I am proud of this picture and it reminds me of the fun day we had.”

“The bean reflects everything to strange shape: bent people, boundless sky, smaller buildings. However, it reflects my thrill, expectation, and tension of my first travel, as they are.”
